This mission introduces Air Units, as two different Copter Units get utilized for the first time, along with a few strategies involving such units.

[edit] Intel

Copter Tactics is the seventh mission of Advance Wars' Field Training Mode. You start with 11 Units compared to Olaf's 12, and Olaf has a firepower advantage as well: four Medium Tanks, while Orange Star is having problems developing their own Medium Tanks.

This mission introduces Air Units and their mechanics, along with strategies for using them to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

[edit] Strategy

[edit] Capture

This Tutorial mission is simple if you follow Nell's instructions with the T Copter; you'll have the enemy HQ Captured by Day 3 by doing that. Olaf won't be able to get there in time to stop the Capture to make an easy victory out of what could have been a sure defeat!

Now, there is another way of doing this, but it's very difficult to win this battle by rout. First-time players shouldn't try this because this will lead to frustration, but if you feel up to the task, read on.

[edit] Rout

Winning Copter Tactics by rout is something similar to some of the challenges that Advance Campaign has. Attacking four Medium Tanks head-on without adequate firepower is suicidal. So instead, wait for them to approach you and blast away with your Artillery. This, the Tank and the B Copter are the co-MVP's of winning this one by rout, so don't lose them.

Park both Mechs and the Tank in the two outer cities with the Artillery in the middle.Keep everyone close so another Unit can take over when its HP starts to run low. Lure in the enemy B Copter and destroy it with your own. Once it has been attacked, use your T Copter as a decoy so your B Copter won't get shot at by Olaf's B Copter. This will buy the time needed to destroy the enemy Artillery unit.

When Blue Moon Infantry and Mechs are within range, use your own Infantry to attack them, beating them to the punch. It'll take time for Olaf's remaining two Medium Tanks to get there because they were distracted by your HQ capturing Infantry. This will give you the breathing room necessary to recover from the first wave to take on the second.

Your B Copter probably got attacked by the other two Medium Tanks if you took out the Artillery. That's fine because the bottleneck now has some much-needed room to operate. Move your T Copter into the range of the enemy B Copter to draw its fire, sacrificing the unit but allowing your B Copter to take it out the following day. Be warned: if the APC and T Copter are both within range of the B Copter, it'll go for the APC.

Now you put your APC to work by putting it at the front of the bottleneck. This will draw enemy fire, but allow you to further damage his remaining units with your Artillery. If he Joins the last two Medium Tanks life will be a lot easier you're almost there. That tank you've been taking care of will about to be used for cleanup because the Artillery decimated Olaf's Medium Tanks, sending them to the scrap heap! Chances are, he had Infantry and Mechs retreat to heal.

Give yourself a round of applause--you've cleared Copter Tactics by routing a force that had greater firepower! The following images show how this strategy should progress:

An A Rank is the highest rank that can be attained during Field Training missions, but if you try to win this mission by Rout you'll probably wind up with a C Rank instead.
